You said Yes! Now what?

You are engaged, and feel like you are on top of the world! This is the day you have been waiting for since you were a little girl. Now that it has finally happened, you find yourself asking, “Where do I begin”?

1. The first priority is making a guest list. Discuss your list with both sides of the family to make sure everyone is on the same page, and to make sure you didn’t exclude anyone. Your guest list will determine what venues you choose to look at based on the number of guests. Add in the ‘maybes’ because you can always eliminate them further down the road if there is not enough space, or if your budget is tight.

2. Set a budget…so here comes the less glamorous side of planning a wedding. Determine who is paying for what. Discuss this with both sides of the family to see how much you will need to contribute. If you are a couple that is paying for the entire wedding on your own, you may want to give yourself an adequate amount of time to save so you don’t feel stressed in the months leading up to the wedding.

3. What season? Are you in love with spring blooms, or do you prefer a fall palette? Will you be having the ceremony indoors or outdoors? Are you on a tight budget? All of these questions will help you determine what season is best for you!

4. Search for the perfect venue and ceremony location. Based on your personal style, along with the month, location, budget and capacity that you have determined start shopping around. The best resource is word of mouth, so speak with family and friends about recent weddings they have attended and what their experiences have been. Just like when you met your fiancé, when you find the right place, you will know.

5. Register! It may seem too soon, but family members and friends are going to want to share in the excitement and give you an engagement gift! Instead of getting presents that you don’t love, why not register and receive your favorite vase or toasting flutes? Even if you are not ready to register for household items like a spatula and iron, consider registering for a few nice must-haves like a crystal vase, cake knife & server, toasting flutes, picture frames, etc. Your friends and family will be thankful that they do not need to think of a gift on their own.
